This is the question that came up as soon as I started to write my Meadows book*, but the answer seemed to be ‘different things to different people’.. To the farmer it seemed to me that meadows were traditionally grasslands that were mown in order to make hay, which was stored dry for use as fodder in winter. As such they contrasted with pastures, which were grasslands that were not mown. Transitional meadows. A transitional meadow occurs when a field, pasture, farmland, or other cleared land is no longer cut or grazed and starts to display luxuriant growth, extending to the flowering and self-seeding of its grass and wildflower species. The condition is however only temporary, because the grasses eventually become shaded out when scrub and woody plants become well-established. In The Meadows And Along The Pastures THE intermingling of spring and summer is so general in the bright grassy meadows, now so lovely in their greenness and beauty, that it is difficult to distinguish between the "beauteous children of the spring," and the more glorious summer flowers, which form the "motley meadow's glory and delight.".

Then it can be grazed again – this is called aftermath grazing. It makes extremely good hay too – the large range of species means a large range of nutrients – it’s just that it doesn’t produce big yields. As nouns the difference between pasture and meadow is that pasture is land on which cattle can be kept for feeding while meadow is a field or pasture; a piece of land covered or cultivated with grass, usually intended to be mown for hay; an area of low-lying vegetation, especially near a river.

As a verb pasture is to move animals into a to graze. Reed Canary Grass For Meadows And Pastures - Extension Bulletin - University Of Minnesota Agricultural Extension Service Pamphlet – January 1, by A.
